Disney’s Awesome Things #21: The Clean, Wand-less Spaceship Earth

#21When I first got the news that the Spaceship Earth “Epcot” signage and wand were to be removed, I wasn’t happy. I had never seen the ball without them, so to me, this was shocking. But not for long.

Since I had never seen it before the wand and other needless glitz, I was horrified at the thought of all that leaving. To me, it was a part of Spaceship Earth, and without it, things would be plain and boring.

Boy, I’m so glad I was wrong! When I saw that enormous “golf ball” for the first time after the decluttering, I was amazed. Saying it looked great would be a horrible understatement.

If I had to describe the clean Spaceship Earth in adjectives, it would be only the following – simple yet majestic.

That’s why it’s the iconic structure for such a brilliant park as Epcot. Inside it’s reflective silver shingles an adventure awaits.

I am the opposite. I was so happy and relieved to see the “clutter” leave Spaceship Earth, as I was used to the simple, clean, iconic symbol of Epcot standing alone. It needs nothing else!!

      • Matt 6:13 pm on August 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Very true! The simple but beautiful icon needs nothing to make it look impressive. It’s amazing all by itself.

I also agree that a “wand-less” Spaceship Earth is much better. It was nice for the year 2000 and all that millenium celebration stuff. Only.
For now, this unique masterpiece looks splendorous by itself.

Very true John. I enjoyed it for the 2000 celebration but it quickly got old. I never realized how wonderful it was just standing by itself until I actually saw it!

My traveling partner had never seen Spaceship Earth without the wand (his first trip 2003), he was very upset when he found out that the wand was coming down. I got him a Mickey Premium, he got over the whole wand issue . . .

I like it uncluttered as well, the wand could be cool in closer pictures but long distance photos are much better without it.

LOL Good story Gaylin. And you’re right the wand made for some nice pictures, but in the end SE all alone is what we want. :)

Disney’s Awesome Things #20: Being the Chosen One to Hold the Red Card

#20In the wonderful world of wait times, some folks often wonder how Disney manages to constantly keep an accurate wait time up for guests. And that’s where the infamous red card comes in.

If you’ve ever been the “chosen one” to hold the Red Card, then you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Every so often, a cast member will scan the magnetic card and give it to one lucky guest. Then when said guest gets to the end of the line, another cast member scans the card, which updates the ride’s wait time.

“This card is used to help provide you with the most accurate wait time. Please hand the card to a cast member at the end of the line. Thank you.”

The fate of the ride wait time is in your hands. Now doesn’t that feel awesome?

I’ve done this a few times. I call it being the “wait time probe.” :D

        Haha nice Caitlin! ;)

By the way, if you want an avatar to show up next to your name like a few folks did in the previous post’s comments, just go to gravatar.com and set up one there. It’ll show on many blogs including this one. Just in case you’re interested. :)

I have been handed many a red card – I wonder if I look responsible or something. I always feel like I am contributing a wee bit to the magic.

LOL I feel responsible when I’m wearing it too. It’s a nice feeling…gives me a sense of helping out, and like you said, contributing to the magic. :)

love it! On one of our trips it became a joke because we were asked to hold the red card so many times. We started to get disappointed when we weren’t asked to hold it!

      • Matt 8:18 pm on July 26, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Wow Beth that’s awesome! Haha I don’t think we’ve had it more than twice in one trip, but it seems you had a lucky visit. ;)

Disney’s Awesome Things #19: Short Rain Showers that Clear the Park

#19You can see it coming from a mile away. It’s those dreaded Florida afternoon showers that get everyone soaked, cold, and miserable. But something awesome happens when the storm ends.

That’s right – the clouds blow away, the sun comes out, you can feel the humidity rise as the storm is now over. But what’s so awesome? The fact that everyone is gone.

Yep it’s true that those rain showers really clear the crowds. It starts raining, and it’s like the floodgate keeping all the little guests in suddenly opens and people pour out of the park.

Sure it’s now uncomfortably humid, but look on the awesome side. You now have the park close to yourself. Now stroll through that empty park and enjoy yourself.

Great choice! One of the benefits of being a Floridian instead of just the average Disney tourist :) .

Haha very true, Melissa. All those poor tourists think they have to leave! ;)

My favourite thing is when it starts to rain and people leave the water park!! Ha ha, as if rain is going to make you wetter than swimming!

Then it is time to race off to the Crush ‘N Gusher for lots of slides after everyone leaves.

      • Matt 5:12 pm on July 14, 2010 Permalink | Reply

LOL That’s awesome Gaylin. But I’m sad to admit I’ve never been to a Disney waterpark. I know, I know. Hypocrite! =P

      • Vera 11:24 am on February 3, 2011 Permalink | Reply

My best tip is to go to the water parks during any warm winter days. They’re absolutely empty and Crush N’ Gusher the best when rode 5 times in a row.

    • gaylin 6:52 pm on July 14, 2010 Permalink | Reply

      Matt,
until you go down the water coasters at Typhoon Lagoon’s Crush ‘N Gusher, you won’t know what you are missing. The first time we went on it, we must have gone on the slides 20 or 30 times in one day. So much fun.

I have had lunch with an Imagineer once and it turned out he had helped design the Crush ‘N Gusher area and all the theming. Had a great time talking to him.

I know, I know…I really need to go!

You had lunch with an Imagineer? That’s awesome Gaylin! :)

It was totally awesome to have lunch with an Imagineer. Private dining room at the Brown Derby, excellent service. Talked about everything Disney you can think of. About 3 hours, relaxed, informative, great food. Well worth it.

Wow I can’t imagine…that must have been very very cool! And Brown Derby is nice too!

Wow, talking about water park and rain… it happened to me once at the Blizzard Beach!
The greatest thing was to be relaxing under one of those umbrellas, while watching people running away from rain (yeah, the rain would really make them wetter…. lol), and than ride the Summit Plummet 5 times, with almost no lines!
That was a real thrill!!! I love Blizzard Beach!!

I love animal kingdom on the rain!

      • Matt 6:37 pm on July 19, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I’ve only been in Animal Kingdom in the rain once. I was next up to ride Expedition Everest and they shut it down for a few minutes. =P

We went to WDW i June. This was true for Animal Knigdom and Epcot, however Magic Kingdom the crowds were even larger after the rain. However, I believe the reason for the crowds was that it was the first week the East Coast schools were out for Summer vacation and no one was leaving the park. We also figured June 18 would be least crowded day since Universal was opening Harry Potter, In the morning it was nice, but it was extremely crowded in the afternoon, Several people had come from Universal and said they left and came to WDW because the Harry Potter Section and ride were terrible.

      • Matt 2:59 pm on August 6, 2010 Permalink | Reply

My birthday is June 18. =D

That’s unfortunate…usually crowds are cleared by the rain but I guess the summer is so busy people are glad the heat is less and stay. I thought Harry Potter was supposed to be awesome? ;)

Disney’s Awesome Things #18: Getting Free Desserts on Your Birthday

#18YUM. Just look at that ice cream cone. It’s wet coolness is just glistening in the hot sunlight. The instant you put your tongue on that it will be an absolute paradise. All your troubles will slip away.

What’s even better than simply having some of those delicious Disney desserts you ask? Simple – getting them for free.

If you go to Disney parks on your birthday (and are wearing that infamous pin), it’s true. Not only will you hear “Happy Birthday!” one hundred times, but maybe – just maybe you’ll get some special surprises.

More common if you go into sit-down restaurants, the waiter will bring you a complimentary dessert on your birthday.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the sweet treats as you eat yourself into bliss.

This also happens quite a bit when you get married! My husband and I just got back and I think we got free desert at every restaurant (express or sit-down)! It was fantastic!
