Conquer the Heat – The ‘Coolest’ Attractions Around

Guess what? Florida is hot. And that’s not going to change anytime soon. So until it does, here are some places for cooling off + relaxing in the parks.

    Ellen’s Energy Adventure
Alright so maybe the jokes are a little corny, and maybe the effects are a tad outdated. But still this is the ultimate place to get refreshed.

Including the pre-show, it lasts an astonishing 45 minutes – giving you plenty of time to rest the weary leg muscles and soak up as much air conditioning as you can.

    Spaceship Earth
Another long one here. Lasting about 25 minutes from start to finish, Spaceship Earth is a great relaxer. This ride also stops fairly frequently for handicapped guests, etc. so that might get you even more time to cool off.

If you’re bored one day, do what I do: just change the language and listen to the spiel in French, Spanish, or Portuguese. Very entertaining.

    Club Cool
While not necessarily an “attraction”, Club Cool is located near the Fountain of Nations at Epcot.

Not only is it an indoor area where you can cool off for as long as you want, but also they have fountains of soft drinks from around the world – for free and with unlimited refills. It’s really one of the hidden gems at Epcot.

    3D/4D Films
That’s right – Mickey’s PhilharMagic, It’s Tough to be a Bug, MuppetVision, & Honey I Shrunk the Audience Captain EO all last fairly long and are very cool. If you get my draft…er drift. Plus the wonderful smell of apple pie doesn’t hurt either!

Where do you go? Of course there are many more attractions and other places that are great for cooling off – what are your favorites?

I am also fond of The Land pavillion, The relatively short lineups for the Living with the Land and Circle of Life make them good targets.

Plus all lineups are inside, making them more attractive than say Spaceship Earth which can have you outside for quite a while on a busy day before your 20 min cooloff.

      • Matt 3:34 pm on July 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Ah yes Darren – I forgot about The Land Pavilion. It’s a great cooling off place.

Lots of things to do there and as you said all of the lines are inside as well.

(P.S. This is the 600th comment on WDW Central…woah!)

      Hi Matt!
I would say that the Mexican attraction (not called “El Rio del Tiempo” anymore) is also good for some “cool” moments.
But how could you forget about the Haunted Mansion!? LOL
Is one of the greatest rides for some cooling off.

      • Matt 3:10 pm on July 6, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Ah yes you mean Gran Fiesta Tour – great idea John – that’s an awesome place to cool off!

I know, right! Haunted Mansion is my FAVORITE attraction ever and I left it off the list. I must have not been thinking straight! ;)

        • John 2:48 pm on July 7, 2010 Permalink

Oh yes, the Gran Fiesta Tour! I had forgotten this name. It was a nice update to this ride, except the fact that one of the characters, the parrot “Zé Carioca”, is actually Brazilian, not Mexican. But that’s part of the fun.

I just remembered of the Great Movie Ride as another cool attraction!

        • Matt 10:47 am on July 8, 2010 Permalink

It was, I think the ride is great. A lot less serious than the original.

Great Movie Ride – another “great” one! =D

I discovered that The American Adventure attraction is a great place to cool off (and listen to some great singers beforehand) during the summer.

      • Matt 9:54 am on July 10, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Oh yes, another nice one! You’re right, the singers that are sometimes there beforehand are amazing. =)

In Depth: The Complexity and Technical Genius Behind Theme Park Music

I love Disney theme park music. In fact it’s most definitely the “genre” of music that fills the most space in my iPod. And the sad part is, it plays constantly all day with little to no recognition.

So here’s a little info about the music geniuses behind it all and a quick showcase of the awesome music itself.

    Bruce Broughton

Bruce Broughton is one of the creative minds behind the music heard in the theme parks. More specifically, he was the composer for the following:

    • O Canada! Film – 2007 Arrangement (World Showcase, Epcot)
    • Spaceship Earth (Future World, Epcot)
    • One Man’s Dream (Disney’s Hollywood Studios)
    • Ellen’s Energy Adventure (Future World, Epcot)
    • Honey, I Shrunk the Audience! (Future World, Epcot)
    • The Timekeeper (Extinct – Tomorrowland, Magic Kingdom)
    • The Making of Me (Extinct – Future World, Epcot)

These are arguably some of the best themes in the parks. Spaceship Earth, Ellen’s Energy Adventure, and Honey, I Shrunk the Audience are some of my all-time favorites.

    Sherman Brothers

Another theme park legend (among other things) here, Robert and Richard Sherman are responsible for so many catchy themes of the theme parks. There include:

    • “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow” (Carousel of Progress, MK)
    • “It’s a Small World” (it’s a small world, Magic Kingdom)
    • “One Little Spark” (Journey Into Imagination, Epcot)
    • “Chim Chim Cher-ee” (Great Movie Ride, DHS)
    • “The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room” (Enchanted Tiki Room, Magic Kingdom)
    • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (All Songs)

As a matter of fact it was “One Little Spark” that made me realize the complexity of the theme park music. I posted this on #ConfessFriday on Twitter one day. I got back a couple of responses, but one that stood out to me was by @ThemeParkDaily who said this:

“Not nerdy at all, lots of Disney Park music is technically brilliant.”

Very true, I think. Now let’s take a look at our final composers.

    Xavier Atencio + Buddy Baker

More commonly known as “X” Atencio, he and Baker composed one of my favorite tunes and rides – “Grim, Grinning Ghosts” in The Haunted Mansion. X also wrote the lyrics to “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me)”, while Baker arranged the music for Impressions de France.

    Your thoughts?

It’s sometimes hard to recognize and appreciate the Disney theme park music because it is always so well integrated and themed that we don’t consciously notice it. But that’s what makes it work so well, and that’s why it’s so complex.

What are your thoughts? What is your favorite music in the parks? Share your thoughts on all this in the comments.

I have a soft spot for One Little Spark. I love all of Epcot’s music, but my favorite Disney Park music of all time has to be the BGM in Innoventions Plaza. It’s just so catchy that whenever I walk through the plaza, I have to clap along to the music!

      • Matt 5:03 pm on June 10, 2010 Permalink | Reply

One Little Spark is great. But I do have to agree with you, Innoventions BGM is my all time favorite. I listen to the entire 50 minute loop almost everyday!

    • Sarah 8:34 am on June 11, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I quadruple-love the theme park music. I love the Epcot entrance music (on one of my many CDs). And let’s not forget the parade music! The Millennium parade at Epcot remains one of my favorite songs.

      • Matt 11:29 am on June 11, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Parade music is great – I definitely agree! IllumiNations is also a great soundtrack. My favorite parade music is Fantillusion (in Disneyland Paris).

    • John 11:26 am on June 11, 2010 Permalink | Reply

There are lots of great music throughout the parks, but for me, two were outstanding:

      • The music played in the exit of Fantasmic;
      • And the Spaceship Earth Finale, that unfortunately doesn’t play anymore.
      • Matt 11:30 am on June 11, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Hey John the Spaceship Earth finale music was great. But I also like the new version (that plays in the background of your future video) just as much. :)

Disney’s Awesome Things #12: The Bilingual Ride Safety Spiels

#12 I think it’s fair to say that I’m completely obsessed with the Disney ride safety spiels – it’s always one of the main things I look forward to hearing when I arrive. When I hear it, I know I’m in Disney.

The Spanish parts are always my favorite, mainly because I find Spanish very interesting and actually know what they are saying. Look below for some Spanish spiels – as you might have not known what the words look like written out.

I find it amazing and extremely interesting that Disney somehow finds a way to take a generic safety spiel in English and Spanish and transform it – making it fit the theme of the current attraction. How clever is that?

    Here’s some examples:

And now, a carriage approaches – taking you into the boundless realm of the supernatural. Once on board, remain safely seated with your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside. And, watch your children…please.

Un carruaje que se a se. Y ahora: permanezca sentado y mantengo las manos, brazos, pies, y piernas dentro de vehiculo. Y cuida los pequeñitos. ¡Y ahora – preparase!

    Or maybe this one:

Ahoy, mateys! For your safety, remain seated with yer hands, arms, feet, and legs inside the boat. And no flash pictures. Prepare to make sail!

Para su seguridad, permanezca sentado con las manos, brazos, pies, y piernas dentro el barco. Y cuida sus niños. ¡Muchas gracias!

    Or my personal favorite:

Attention, Expedition Everest team members, once on board, secure all gear in the cargo pouch in front of you – then, pull down on the restraint. For your safety, remain seated and keep your hands, arms, feet, and legs inside the train – and watch your children.

Gracias.

Am I weird for liking the safety spiels? Which one is your favorite? Should this even make the Awesome Things list? Let me know!

I have always loved the Spanish version of the monorail safety spiel…but dont ask me to quote it here cuz I dont remember it that well 8(:-P

I think everyone loves the monorail spiel.

“Please stand clear of the doors. Por favor manténgase alejado de las puertas.” I think that’s what you were referring to. ;)

The Spanish spiel at Grizzly River Run is great! The guy tries to sound like the guy speaking English. Its great!

I can’t think of what it is, but something about the Spanish Big Thunder Mountain spiel cracked me up when I was a CM there.

I’ll admit, I’m just a little bit obsessed with the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad safety spiel. I don’t speak a word of Spanish, but that has never stopped me from listening intently to the Spanish translation each time I ride and hoping to memorize it. And I can’t seem to find it transcribed ANYWHERE online :(

in the first episode of Phineas and Ferb, (at least I think it was the first episode, there are at least three where they build roller-coasters) Phineas says “permanese sentado por favor” and I go right back to my childhood of riding the Matterhorn and Disneyland!

Is Disney Headed in the Wrong Direction?

Be sure to read to the end of this post.
Otherwise I look like a jerk who hates Disney.

If Walt were here today, what would he be thinking of Disney World right now?

Walt, you must be a little disappointed.

Disappointed by the fact that no one could plan ahead, and now the Expedition Everest Yeti stands lifeless and defeats the purpose of the attraction. Disappointed by the fact that carelessness at 2AM on July 5th cost one man his life. Disappointed that Disney World has become satisfied with the status quo – something that should never happen.

See that picture? That didn’t need to happen. That shouldn’t have happened. But it did. Why?

I don’t really know – but chances are it has to do with carelessness. This is about the fourth accident in Disney Transportation over the past few months. I’m not going to pretend I know anything about running a company as large and well-known as Disney – but I do know that Walt wouldn’t let this slide. It’s time to take things more seriously, Disney.

Disney is supposed to be a place free from the troubles of the ‘real world’. Free from distractions, free from reality. Yet when something like this happens, or even something as horrific as the monorail incident, it reminds us all that Disney still IS the real world. We’ve just been fooling ourselves.

For every incident, accident, injury, & even death that occurs in their gates that could’ve been prevented, chances are there is one big fan or future guest that looses the magic. All because of carelessness.

DEAR DISNEY – I’m not bashing you. I’m still the biggest fan out their of Walt Disney World. I love your work. You’re all brilliant – really. I just think it’s time to put quality back over quantity. Saftey over efficiency. And magic over money.

So to answer the original question – I don’t think Disney is headed in the wrong direction. I just think they have made a couple of wrong turns, but that is easily fixed. If they catch themselves now, they can get going in the good direction, the direction that was originally intended. The end.

If I remember correctly from reading an earlier news report…the Disney bus rear-ended a bus for another hotel. The strange thing about it was that the other bus was parked in the right lane, and the driver was standing outside the vehicle. The situation is just odd.

      • Matt 7:20 am on March 25, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I totally agree – the whole situation is very odd. But once we find out what caused it, etc. it should definitely clear things up. Still, I think it could’ve been prevented. We’ll have to see. =)

        Thanks for sharing!

    • Ernie 3:57 pm on March 25, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Here is my feeling on on the Disney “carelessness.” “People” just don’t care anymore. At work, at home, and it life, people just don’t care. Most people today are selfish and care only about doing for themselves. In most work places, works don’t take pride in there work or go the extra mile to do the best job they can. This has rolled over to cast members and the bosses that run Disney. … And you are right, WALT would never have excepted this or would allow it. I love Disney too… but a little Magic has been lost.

      • Matt 4:11 pm on March 25, 2010 Permalink | Reply

As cynical and depressing as your comment sounds, you’re absolutely right Ernie. Unfortunately, it’s rare to find people that actually care – when it should be the opposite.

Yes, every time something stupid like this happens, a little magic gets lost. Hopefully it will come back. And you’re right – this attitude is making it’s way into the managers’ & cast members’ job as well.

Thanks for the comment, Ernie. Hopefully no more careless incidents will happen anymore. :)

What’s wrong with the Everest Yeti?

    • Chris 3:51 pm on March 27, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I tend to think some of this has to do with people working longer shifts to make up for those who were laid off or positions that weren’t filled. Disney World is still really great and the CMs I’ve interacted with all seem to care (okay, there are exceptions, but I think they’re in the minority). But Disney needs to hire more people. I have a freind who worked 12 days in a row. His job is slightly more “cushy” than driving a bus and if he messes up, someone’s going to get, at worst, a papercut or a messed up reservation, but working that many days straight takes its toll.

I’m wondering what’s going to happen when Legoland and Harry Potter open? How will Disney respond to these guest complaints that seem to be growing more and more common? Because they’re going to get some competition here very soon.

      • Matt 12:16 pm on March 28, 2010 Permalink | Reply

You’re definitely right. Disney is working lots of people too hard – another thing that opens the door wide for careless and costly mistakes.

Honestly, I don’t think Universal will ever be real competition for Disney. But don’t forget that Disney is expanding their Fantasyland, adding a 3D Star Tours, etc. so that might balance things out.
