Disney’s Awesome Things #17: Zipping Along the People Mover

#17Many argue that it’s the intense rides that make Disney. I beg to differ. While those are fun, it’s definitely the peaceful relaxing attractions that you’ll enjoy most. For instance, the TTA.

Say whatever you want about how awesome Tower of Terror or Space Mountain is – but I’ll be completely satisfied on the zippy Tomorrowland Transit Authority, aka the People Mover.

It’s almost as if all your cares go down the drain as you are zipping along the twisty magnetic track observing the crowds, lines, and rides. And the fact that it’s half air-conditioned doesn’t hurt either.

It’s a blast through the future and an awesome attraction that should never be missed.

Yeah, I just moved so whereas I used to live 45 minutes from Disney, I now live 15…and with an annual pass nothing good can come from that lol.

15 minutes away?! That’s awesome – I thought I had it good being 3 hours away. Congrats on the move, then! =D

I so agree with this! One of the things I love about it is the corny lines like “paging Tom Morrow”…. always makes me smile. I will say that another thing about the TTA that makes it very useful is the ability to ride it and “see” the inside of Space Mountain….which when we had a 7 year old who was “not sure” if she wanted to ride SM, helped her decide that maybe she would just wait until another year. Beats having a terrified child on your hands…..Thanks for the reminder of this great little ride!

Thanks Nancy! It’s too bad the “Tom Morrow” line is gone in the new version. =(

It’s also a great spy tool for when Space Mountain is broken down! ;)

I love the TTA, it always feels like I am above the noise, 2 in a car, I can put my feet up and even on the hottest day there seems to be a breeze.

I also love riding it when I get to go to the Not So Scary Hallowen Party, it has a great view of all things spooky.

Hey Gaylin – yeah one of my favorite things to do is put my feet up. GREAT way to relax!

Also, thanks for the liking WDW Central on Facebook. It means a lot to me. =)

I LOVE the People Mover. It’s a great way to unwind on a slow ride that people don’t realize takes you up close to and THROUGH a couple of attractions in Tomorrowland!

The Great Debate: TTA Changes Good or Bad?

Hey there, it’s been a while! I was waiting to post this post until I had been to Walt Disney World myself to see the updated TTA/People Mover. I went last weekend, so now I think it’s time for me to share my opinion.

If you don’t know what happened yet, here it is: Disney closed the Tomorrowland Transit Authority when Space Mountain closed for major refurbishments. People were expecting new lighting and refurbished cars – but something that was completely unexpected to me was a new dialogue.

That’s right, the familiar deep, monotone voice, along with the well known male & female voices that used to be heard throughout the attraction have been removed. No more “Paging Mr. Morrow – Mr. Tom Morrow. Your party from Saturn has arrived. Please give them a ring.”

Instead, there is now a more energetic young man as the narrator. He is softer (I couldn’t even understand him the first half of the ride) and he basically just gives you a tour of Tomorrowland, promoting the rides in the surrounding area.

My thoughts on this are simple. I’m not that upset, for some reason. Sure I will miss the old narrations and such (D-CoT has some of the old announcements to listen to on demand), but I don’t think change is bad. Everyone will get used to the new narrator, and who knows, in a few years he might be the “classic” that everyone wants to keep.

All I’m saying is – are these new changes really that bad? Share your thoughts below; let us know what you think of these changes if you’ve seen them (or at least watched a Youtube video).

After getting a chance to experience the new TTA, I agree that I wasn’t overly upset about the change in narration. I was happy to be able to ride one of my old favorites again.

I am excited at what looks to be improved and expanded views of Space Mountain that could be really awesome when it reopens.

Agreed – I was happy to simply zip around Tomorrowland yet again.

Expanded views of SM? Not sure what you mean here, but it sure will be nice when it reopens. :)

        Thanks for sharing. =)

I have to say that although I admire the Disney philosophy of progress and change, I feel that the TTA change is not a good one. It seems that Disney inserted a generic enthusiasm to the ride that smacks of very forgettable commercialism. Commercialism isn’t always a bad thing when it is seemless and clever, this attempt is watered down and altogether forgettable. Needless to say I won’t be repeating lines from one of my favorites as my family always did in the past with the former. I suppose the lines will go into the nostalgia file along with such minutae as “hold on to them hats and glasses!”(Big Thunder) And “kindly watch your step please, watch your step” (haunted mansion). Small things, yes, but still forever moving towards nuetral like a certain legendary icon has so quietly done throughout the years.

Partially agreed with you. I agree this change is not for the better and your “watered down…and forgettable” part. However, I don’t think it’s as terribly significant as many people are thinking. We’ll get over it, I’m sure.

Thanks for sharing, Mark. Really enjoyed reading your thoughts. :)

Hey Matt thanks for your feedback, I was wondering if you knew if the TTA changes were in any way connected to the Alamo sponsorship? Has Alamo been the sponsor for long? I know it was Goodyear when they were using tires for propulsion etc. Just curious. As my wife is always so apt to say “why do you care?” And as my old art teacher used to say, “curiousity fules the imagination, imagination fules creativity” Enjoy the magic!

Yes. The narration is that bad. So bad in fact that they (thankfully) added in some of the best parts of the original narration as of June 16th, 2010.

They did Kelly? Which parts? I’ll have to keep an ear out next time I go. =)
