Disney’s Awesome Things #17: Zipping Along the People Mover

#17Many argue that it’s the intense rides that make Disney. I beg to differ. While those are fun, it’s definitely the peaceful relaxing attractions that you’ll enjoy most. For instance, the TTA.

Say whatever you want about how awesome Tower of Terror or Space Mountain is – but I’ll be completely satisfied on the zippy Tomorrowland Transit Authority, aka the People Mover.

It’s almost as if all your cares go down the drain as you are zipping along the twisty magnetic track observing the crowds, lines, and rides. And the fact that it’s half air-conditioned doesn’t hurt either.

It’s a blast through the future and an awesome attraction that should never be missed.

“Paging Mr. Morrow – Mr. Tom Morrow. Your party from Saturn has arrived. Please give them a ring.”

Wow Melissa, just yesterday, huh? You’re lucky. ;)

Yeah, I just moved so whereas I used to live 45 minutes from Disney, I now live 15…and with an annual pass nothing good can come from that lol.

15 minutes away?! That’s awesome – I thought I had it good being 3 hours away. Congrats on the move, then! =D

I so agree with this! One of the things I love about it is the corny lines like “paging Tom Morrow”…. always makes me smile. I will say that another thing about the TTA that makes it very useful is the ability to ride it and “see” the inside of Space Mountain….which when we had a 7 year old who was “not sure” if she wanted to ride SM, helped her decide that maybe she would just wait until another year. Beats having a terrified child on your hands…..Thanks for the reminder of this great little ride!

Thanks Nancy! It’s too bad the “Tom Morrow” line is gone in the new version. =(

It’s also a great spy tool for when Space Mountain is broken down! ;)

I love the TTA, it always feels like I am above the noise, 2 in a car, I can put my feet up and even on the hottest day there seems to be a breeze.

I also love riding it when I get to go to the Not So Scary Hallowen Party, it has a great view of all things spooky.

Hey Gaylin – yeah one of my favorite things to do is put my feet up. GREAT way to relax!

Also, thanks for the liking WDW Central on Facebook. It means a lot to me. =)

Love the TTA… still call it Wedway people mover though! :)

I think most people call it the People Mover…LOL

I LOVE the People Mover. It’s a great way to unwind on a slow ride that people don’t realize takes you up close to and THROUGH a couple of attractions in Tomorrowland!

Disney’s Awesome Things #14: Good Ol’ Uncle Orville

#14The Carousel of Progress is always a must-do for me. Sure it gets kind of lame after a while, but it’s so memorable and the fact that Walt himself created it makes it even more awesome.

One of my favorite characters in the rotating theatre show is good ol’ Uncle Orville – known for his famous (and only) line in each scene, “No privacy at all around this place!” While he’s only physically seen in one scene (in the picture above), he is heard in every scene if I’m not mistaken.

“Uncle Orville’s taken over the coolest spot in the house. And he’s rigged up a real clever contraction. He calls it “air cooling.” To bad he’s not reading the help wanted ads.”

And for a fun fact you might not have known – Uncle Orville is voiced by Mel Blanc. Blanc’s son is also in the attraction as the radio announcer.

one time, a friend of mine literally rode it twice in a row without getting off. it was raining out really badly during the summer (surprise there) and we decided it would be best for our health to stay in the ride to wait out the storm.

Haha that’s awesome Julian! Well one time my family and I were stuck in the intro scene for three go arounds because the theatre did not move. Finally during the fourth time they evacuated us all. It was torture! ;)

Disney’s Awesome Things #10: ‘That Guy’ in Monster’s Inc. Laugh Floor

#10 The Laugh Floor is a great attraction in that it thrives on guest interaction. If there were no guests, there would be no show – which makes it an interesting concept. Especially fun, is ‘that guy’.

In case you’re lame and need a brief refresher, “that guy” is a person in the audience chosen at random before the show starts – and once he is chosen, he’ll be picked on for the rest of the show.

Yes, it’s always fun to laugh at with the unlucky person picked for this embarrassing position – especially when he gets put on the screen with a title underneath saying he’s offering to buy everyone churros.

That Guy definitely is a funny and awesome part of your day at Disney. Unless, of course, it’s you!

I went to Disney World a couple years ago, and i remember i ended up sitting right next to that guy, and when the spotlight pointed on me and my girlfriend at the beginning, the line under us said “Feels the urge to get up and start dancing”

I took my two girls to Disney for the first time over Spring Break and I WAS That Guy! I was wearing one of those khaki floppy hats you get at Animal Kingdom with six pins on it. I had bought the hat just to give my girls the pins and ended up wearing it the whole trip. The comment about “rather being fishing” was great, but the last joke about me being on “a three-hour tour” was classic (a Gilligan’s Island reference for you youngsters)!

      Great stories, both of you!

@ Stephan – LOL So I assume you both got up and danced, right? Plus you sat next to ‘that guy’ – quite an honor. ;)

@ Doug – You were ‘that guy’? Awesome! I have never seen the “Would rather be fishing” and “three-hour tour” subtitles…maybe they are switching out jokes now! Very funny – and I’m a ‘youngster’, but I do know Gilligan’s Island. ;)

I too, was “that guy” whe I went to the world last year. I suspect because i was wearing a very loud shirt. They were also teasing the kid in the back who was playing with his Nintendo DS during the show.

I was “THAT GUY” on the Monster’s Inc. Laugh Floor! Totally funny! I pretended to be really angry and threatened to ring the neck of the cartoon character on screen…. LOL! The crowd loved it and my boys thought it was cool that their dad was “THAT GUY”. Some kids later in the day said, “Hey, look… it’s that guy!”

I was That Guy last April. I did not like it one bit. We had just arrived at Disney World. After all the hassle of the trip — the flight, the lines, everything — I was tired and cranky and I just wanted to finally relax and enjoy myself. Instead, at the first random attraction we walk into, I’m the butt of a running joke and am being laughed at by hundreds of people. I was ready to turn around and leave, not just Laugh Floor but the whole g-d resort. But it was not my trip, it was my kids’ trip, so I had to sit through it…

…Until I figured out how to protect myself. I thought of a way to make it so they couldn’t show my image on the big screen. I placed my hand right near my face and quietly extended my middle finger in a way that wouldn’t offend people near me but would prevent the camera operator from getting a clean shot of me. It worked. No more That Guy wisecracks from then on. Well, after a while I started feeling a little guilty that I derailed an important feature of the show, so I eventually lowered my hand and they got one more mild crack in, and that was it.

It would be interesting to know what kind of contingency plans they have for when audience members don’t play ball.

I was “that guy.” I was of course a little embarassed, but it made for some good stories and good laughs for my wife and friends that were with me.

Disney’s Best and Worst Move in 2009

Every year Disney announces and opens new, exciting things for the Walt Disney World Resort. Many times, attractions refurbished or announcements made are adored by the world of fans. Some times, they’re flops. Since we’re starting a brand new year full of exciting possibilities, let’s take a look at the best and worst move made in WDW during this past year.

WORST MOVE: Opening Stitch’s Supersonic Celebration

In short, this was a stupid idea. I wonder who thought to put in yet another attraction about Stitch – in the middle of Tomorrowland – with shows in the heat of the day – and there being no shade anywhere. Look how excited everyone looks in this picture – and it was so successful it almost lasted a whole month! I think this addition simply added something new – regardless of the quality it didn’t have that we expect from Disney.

BEST MOVE: D23 & It’s Announcing of Fantasyland Expansion

In my opinion, Disney redeemed themselves (somewhat) by announcing the new Fantasyland expansion at a D23 Expo. This brought new and completely unexpected ideas into our head with wonderful pictures. It makes me look forward to moving forward – now because there’s something big in the works that will vastly improve and expand Magic Kingdom and their classic attractions.

What do you think? Were these the best and worst moves in 2009? If not, what were they? Let me know in the comments.
