Disney’s Awesome Things #18: Getting Free Desserts on Your Birthday

#18YUM. Just look at that ice cream cone. It’s wet coolness is just glistening in the hot sunlight. The instant you put your tongue on that it will be an absolute paradise. All your troubles will slip away.

What’s even better than simply having some of those delicious Disney desserts you ask? Simple – getting them for free.

If you go to Disney parks on your birthday (and are wearing that infamous pin), it’s true. Not only will you hear “Happy Birthday!” one hundred times, but maybe – just maybe you’ll get some special surprises.

More common if you go into sit-down restaurants, the waiter will bring you a complimentary dessert on your birthday.

So sit back, relax, and enjoy the sweet treats as you eat yourself into bliss.

This also happens quite a bit when you get married! My husband and I just got back and I think we got free desert at every restaurant (express or sit-down)! It was fantastic!

Oh I never thought of that…that’s great! Can’t pass up some free desserts! ;)

Conquer the Heat – The ‘Coolest’ Attractions Around

Guess what? Florida is hot. And that’s not going to change anytime soon. So until it does, here are some places for cooling off + relaxing in the parks.

    Ellen’s Energy Adventure
Alright so maybe the jokes are a little corny, and maybe the effects are a tad outdated. But still this is the ultimate place to get refreshed.

Including the pre-show, it lasts an astonishing 45 minutes – giving you plenty of time to rest the weary leg muscles and soak up as much air conditioning as you can.

    Spaceship Earth
Another long one here. Lasting about 25 minutes from start to finish, Spaceship Earth is a great relaxer. This ride also stops fairly frequently for handicapped guests, etc. so that might get you even more time to cool off.

If you’re bored one day, do what I do: just change the language and listen to the spiel in French, Spanish, or Portuguese. Very entertaining.

    Club Cool
While not necessarily an “attraction”, Club Cool is located near the Fountain of Nations at Epcot.

Not only is it an indoor area where you can cool off for as long as you want, but also they have fountains of soft drinks from around the world – for free and with unlimited refills. It’s really one of the hidden gems at Epcot.

    3D/4D Films
That’s right – Mickey’s PhilharMagic, It’s Tough to be a Bug, MuppetVision, & Honey I Shrunk the Audience Captain EO all last fairly long and are very cool. If you get my draft…er drift. Plus the wonderful smell of apple pie doesn’t hurt either!

Where do you go? Of course there are many more attractions and other places that are great for cooling off – what are your favorites?

I am also fond of The Land pavillion, The relatively short lineups for the Living with the Land and Circle of Life make them good targets.

Plus all lineups are inside, making them more attractive than say Spaceship Earth which can have you outside for quite a while on a busy day before your 20 min cooloff.

      • Matt 3:34 pm on July 5, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Ah yes Darren – I forgot about The Land Pavilion. It’s a great cooling off place.

Lots of things to do there and as you said all of the lines are inside as well.

(P.S. This is the 600th comment on WDW Central…woah!)

      Hi Matt!
I would say that the Mexican attraction (not called “El Rio del Tiempo” anymore) is also good for some “cool” moments.
But how could you forget about the Haunted Mansion!? LOL
Is one of the greatest rides for some cooling off.

      • Matt 3:10 pm on July 6, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Ah yes you mean Gran Fiesta Tour – great idea John – that’s an awesome place to cool off!

I know, right! Haunted Mansion is my FAVORITE attraction ever and I left it off the list. I must have not been thinking straight! ;)

        • John 2:48 pm on July 7, 2010 Permalink

Oh yes, the Gran Fiesta Tour! I had forgotten this name. It was a nice update to this ride, except the fact that one of the characters, the parrot “Zé Carioca”, is actually Brazilian, not Mexican. But that’s part of the fun.

I just remembered of the Great Movie Ride as another cool attraction!

        • Matt 10:47 am on July 8, 2010 Permalink

It was, I think the ride is great. A lot less serious than the original.

Great Movie Ride – another “great” one! =D

I discovered that The American Adventure attraction is a great place to cool off (and listen to some great singers beforehand) during the summer.

      • Matt 9:54 am on July 10, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Oh yes, another nice one! You’re right, the singers that are sometimes there beforehand are amazing. =)

Disney’s Awesome Things #17: Zipping Along the People Mover

#17Many argue that it’s the intense rides that make Disney. I beg to differ. While those are fun, it’s definitely the peaceful relaxing attractions that you’ll enjoy most. For instance, the TTA.

Say whatever you want about how awesome Tower of Terror or Space Mountain is – but I’ll be completely satisfied on the zippy Tomorrowland Transit Authority, aka the People Mover.

It’s almost as if all your cares go down the drain as you are zipping along the twisty magnetic track observing the crowds, lines, and rides. And the fact that it’s half air-conditioned doesn’t hurt either.

It’s a blast through the future and an awesome attraction that should never be missed.

One of my favorite things!! :) Just rode it yesterday and it was fantastic!

Wow Melissa, just yesterday, huh? You’re lucky. ;)

        • Melissa 7:19 pm on July 2, 2010 Permalink

Yeah, I just moved so whereas I used to live 45 minutes from Disney, I now live 15…and with an annual pass nothing good can come from that lol.

        • Matt 8:50 pm on July 2, 2010 Permalink

15 minutes away?! That’s awesome – I thought I had it good being 3 hours away. Congrats on the move, then! =D

    • Nancy 6:23 pm on July 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I so agree with this! One of the things I love about it is the corny lines like “paging Tom Morrow”…. always makes me smile. I will say that another thing about the TTA that makes it very useful is the ability to ride it and “see” the inside of Space Mountain….which when we had a 7 year old who was “not sure” if she wanted to ride SM, helped her decide that maybe she would just wait until another year. Beats having a terrified child on your hands…..Thanks for the reminder of this great little ride!

      • Matt 7:16 pm on July 2, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Thanks Nancy! It’s too bad the “Tom Morrow” line is gone in the new version. =(

It’s also a great spy tool for when Space Mountain is broken down! ;)

I love the TTA, it always feels like I am above the noise, 2 in a car, I can put my feet up and even on the hottest day there seems to be a breeze.

I also love riding it when I get to go to the Not So Scary Hallowen Party, it has a great view of all things spooky.

Hey Gaylin – yeah one of my favorite things to do is put my feet up. GREAT way to relax!

Also, thanks for the liking WDW Central on Facebook. It means a lot to me. =)

Love the TTA… still call it Wedway people mover though! :)

      • Matt 9:55 am on July 10, 2010 Permalink | Reply

I think most people call it the People Mover…LOL

    • Figgs 10:37 am on May 16, 2013 Permalink | Reply

I LOVE the People Mover. It’s a great way to unwind on a slow ride that people don’t realize takes you up close to and THROUGH a couple of attractions in Tomorrowland!

The Great Debate: Captain EO Has Returned

As you should know, Michael Jackson’s “Captain EO” is returning to Epcot’s Imagination Pavilion in just a couple of days. But is this a good thing or a bad one?

Here are some comments (both views) under the Orlando Sentinel article:

    Arguments against EO

“This guy is one of the worst role models in recent memory. I am shocked and saddened by Disney’s decision to honor a man who should be utterly forgotten. Disney should know this.”

“Wow WDW, this is your answer to Harry Potter? An old video you had sitting in the back closet? Wow good luck with that.”

“Michael — come back! All is forgiven…NOT! I am embarrassed for WDW.”

    Arguments for EO

“Captain EO isn’t about Michael Jackson’s personal life! It is a 3D movie that is entertainment. If you don’t like MJ, don’t go see it.”

“I love this movie… I’m so glad they brought it back… No matter what your feelings are about Jacksons personal life you can’t argue that he is one of the best performers in history.”

“Stop Hating on Michael Jackson. He was a troubled soul who had a horrible home life who was always trying to recapture his childhood.”

Now I wasn’t going to share my opinion on this but I think I will. I don’t want EO back. It had it’s run, now let it go.

I know most people will disagree with me. But I’d still like to know – what’s your opinion? Duke it out in the comments.

I agree with you. I remember seeing it as a child, but honestly didn’t remember it. While at Disneyland in May I saw the show there- my husband refused to go with me because of the reasons listed above. I didn’t enjoy it and it didn’t even bring back any memories.

I think they should have let it stay in the 80s.

      • Matt 10:00 am on July 9, 2010 Permalink | Reply

Well Beth I respect your husband for sticking to his principles. Very good!

I completely agree – I never saw the original, but it’s something that is very outdated and doesn’t really represent the meaning of a futuristic Epcot.
