Get more time in the parks.

If you’ve spent all day in a Walt Disney World theme park, and see that it’s about time to leave for the night, wait up! You might be able to stay in the park even after it closes for the night. This is perfect for people who spent the afternoon in the pool, or just went to their hotel to take a quick nap. It’s Disney’s Extra Magic Hours, and it can get you a lot more time in your favorite park.

How does it work?

Every day, one park is either opened an hour early, or stays open up to three hours later than the official park closing time. For this service, when the park closes (evening EMH), lines form at main locations around the park.

Wait in line (no Fastpass for this one) – when you get to a cast member, show them your hotel card key. They then put an EMH bracelet on your wrist, and you’re set to go.

Cast members will look for this band when you enter attractions from park closing on.

Tips & Suggestions

  • In order to take advantage of Disney’s Extra Magic Hours, you must be staying at a Disney Resort, and you must have a card key for all members of your party with you. If Joe doesn’t have his card key, he won’t be allowed to ride with your party.
  • Only the most popular rides stay open during EMH. For a list of these rides, look below.
  • It’s best to find these EMH lines before the park closes. When the park does close, everyone heads over and the lines can get fairly long.
  • Ask a cast member where these lines are ahead of time. This way, you’re ahead of the game and can get right to the rides.
  • Don’t bring an old inactive room key and hope to get away with it. All cast members have scanners which detect if the card key is active or not.
  • More attractions are open during evening Extra Magic Hours rather than morning, so keep that in mind when deciding when to take advantage of this service.
  • During peak and holiday travel times, it might actually be to your advantage to avoid the Extra Magic Hours. Disney has 33,000 hotel rooms and no one goes to Disney alone – that means too many people are pointed in the same direction at the same time and the Extra Magic Hours park will be the most crowded park of the day. This is especially true now that concerns about the economy mean less people are paying the extra money for the “Park Hopper” option, resulting in a higher percentage of people utilizing Extra Magic Hours staying in that park all day. If the crowds are near capacity, you’ll have a much nicer time by going to a less busy park.

– It is doubly important to know the Extra Magic Hours schedule if you are not staying at a Disney resort – you don’t want to get to the theme park and find a bunch of Disney guests in line in front of you. One easy rule of thumb is visit a park the day before or the day after it had Extra Magic Hours. Example: Epcot usually has Extra Magic Hours on Tuesday; Monday usually has lower crowds at Epcot.

– Any day that the Magic Kingdom has both the SpectroMagic Parade and Extra Magic Hours will be extra crowded. Any day Disney’s Hollywood Studios has both Extra Magic Hour(s) and Fantasmic! will be disproportionately more crowded.
